I Can’t Tell You How Many Times I’ve Heard the Same Sentence
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard the same sentence over the past thirty years:
“Ron…I only turned it on a couple more times.”
Nobody says it because they were careless. They say it because they’re hoping. Hoping the computer will suddenly recognize the drive. Hoping they can copy family photographs, business records, or “just one file.” Unfortunately, hope is not a recovery strategy when a hard drive has begun clicking.
What the Clicking Usually Means
A clicking hard drive is often struggling to read critical information from its own platters. The read/write heads repeatedly attempt to locate the information they need, producing the familiar clicking sound. Not every clicking drive is unrecoverable—but every clicking drive deserves immediate attention.

The biggest mistake is repeatedly powering the drive back on. Every additional attempt may place more stress on already damaged components. Sometimes nothing changes.
